Why do you focus on improving in-game communication?
Firstly, when we work with communication, we don’t consider communication ‘only’ on the in-game communication. Every part of the way we communicate on pitch is closely related to our relations outside the pitch. Secondly, to answer your question, for us, we consider communication impactful related to many things. The team mentality, the tactical organisation, coordination, and precision as well as intensity. How we are communicating is often defining our learning and performance.
What aspects of the game can in-game communication impact?
A broad question but I think the in-game communication is important in transitions. Defensive and offensive. This is where the game often is defined. But in all situations, it can be crucial for the outcome of the game or situation.
Can you provide examples of how in-game communication influences on-field decision-making for the players?
The best example is probably when players are orienting for each other in third man situations. In complex situations where you need to act fast. Small messages – right, left, up etc. is of great importance. Another situation is where the centre back is organising for pressure or defensive structure.
Do you regard in-game communication as an individual skill set, a relational skill set, or both?
Football is a complex and highly relational game. Therefore, I consider communication as a pattern of interactions. Individual skills in communication are relevant, but only one end of the rope.
How do you incorporate in-game communication into your daily routines?
Every planning of the sessions on the pitch has a tactical angle to implement strategies, playbook and learning facilitation and we consider communication among the players a lever for this. Communication is a theme every day.
